What is Long-Hauler Syndrome?
A large proportion of individuals recovering from COVID-19 have been experiencing prolonged symptoms for weeks to even months after the initial illness. It is not yet fully understood how the virus has the ability to inflict such a wide array of long-term problems, but several studies suggest that viral particles left behind in the body can continue to wreak havoc by causing inflammation, or these particles may go dormant in the body’s tissues only to re-emerge when the immune response to the original infection weakens. As many of the afflicted individuals have been referred to as “COVID long-haulers,” “Long-Hauler Syndrome” has been the unofficial term used to describe COVID-19’s lasting effects. The official term coined by the National Institutes of Health is “post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (PASC).”
Who can be affected?
Anyone that has been infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, regardless whether the initial infection was mild or severe, can experience COVID long-hauler syndrome. Although older individuals and those with serious underlying health conditions are most likely to experience lingering symptoms, even young, otherwise healthy people can feel unwell for weeks to months after the initial infection with severely debilitating and frustrating symptoms nonetheless.
What are the most commonly reported long-term effects of COVID-19?
The virus can attack the body in a variety of ways, causing damage to the lungs, heart, nervous system, kidneys, liver and other organs.
Chronic fatigue
Lack of energy
Difficulty breathing
Shortness of breath
Increased heart rate
Brain fog
Muscle aches
